In 1989, William S. Burroughs recorded the track "No More Stalins, No More Hitlers", which opens this month’s show,
“We have a new type of rule now. Not one-man rule or rule of aristocracy or plutocracy……The rulers of this most insecure of all worlds are rulers by accident; ……"
Jack Kerouac recites to a saxophonist, Bukowski reads his nasty poem, time goes back to the 1950s when Frank O'Hara said, "In times of crisis, we must all decide again and again whom we love." Allen Ginsberg cannot stop howling in the “Footnote to Howl”, the howls are the tributes to the supreme souls, Burroughs says, to love our enemies; across the Pacific, a Chinese poet imagines how Ginsberg's mother writes to him, the mother ages in an insane asylum.
The world is a beautiful place, says Lawrence Ferlinghetti, if you don't mind the bombs and the unhappiness, the deaths and the touch of hell sometimes, you could kiss, walk, love, wear a hat and a pair of pants, dance and swim. A college student says, frustrated with life, "we are here trying to inhale the atmosphere that once nurtured people who dare to be different.” Another student from the 2015 student movement in India, "Everybody is looking for an alternative, it might be different, but there is a genuine need for change…… People are really really looking for people who they can look up to. That's the problem of our generation I feel, I didn’t have anybody to look up to, that’s why this leadership has gained its momentum. It’s actually the time. ”
The music covers Western artists such as Sonic Youth and Chinese rock bands including Omnipotent Youth Society, Hiperson, Lure, etc., half being love songs for the city, while half in grief. Voices that call for changes span time, places and forms, and nonetheless, coherently chase after a Future.
