This is a very special mix for me personally. My grandpa just passed away last week, which is an event for me and indirectly shaped how this mix is created. Because of the sorrow and grief I experienced, especially the fact that I was absent in his funeral and only able to sense everything through video, through the sound of the ritual to connect with the place and the moment. Therefore, in this mix, I used some songs and voices that associated with mourning, memories, trauma, and death. As the female voice in Sans Soleil said, “who said that time heals all wounds? It would be better to say, time heals everything except wounds.” This mix explores how sound is an affective medium about memories. It blends unpleasant noises, drones, intimate conversations, and location sounds linking New York and my home town Luzhou. By using soundtrack from several experimental films that I really like, it is also an experiment of destructing those films and turns watching a films into a listening experience, while listening becomes a semi-transparent way of “seeing” the memories.
