In this month‘s Flow State we explore the stripped down sound of late 90s techstep, where "musical" element is almost excluded and the bare-bones sound of nastily distorted drum & bass takes the place.
During that time the sound of drum & bass finally took shape and creative use of distortion became the norm. Imagine feeding a Reese sample into distortion while playing with a mid parametric EQ to shape the overtone, that's what producers like Ed Rush & Optical did, literally playing their mixing desk like Serum! This idea later morphed into neurofunk's extremist sound while the genre itself's ganja-heavy minimalistic style influenced dubstep producers like Loefah and even Autonomic DNB in the late 00s.
Expect some classics/deep cuts by Dom & Roland, Matrix, Optical + more.
Shout out to Shifted for playing that epic Matrix record at last Flow State event and introducing the sound to me!
