Indie artist Barbarika brings a uniquely textured soundscape to the 19th episode of 毛烏素 discothèque, titled "Under the Music, a Vale Room". For this set, he delicately sliced and reworked audio from some art-house film, laying down a cinematic sonic canvas filled with misty mountains, flowing water, urban echoes, murmurs, weeping, chants, birdsong, and beyond. These ambient threads are seamlessly woven together with handpicked blends from genres like World, Classical, Techno, Experimental, Spoken Word, Musique Concrète, and Pop.

At the heart of the mix lies a deep homage to three American poets who’ve profoundly influenced Barbarika’s creative path—Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, and Elizabeth Bishop. Their poetry readings, carefully remastered and recontextualized, become pivotal moments in the set—transforming the piece into something more than a DJ mix. This is an expansive audio work, open in concept and fluid in movement—a sonic essay as much as it is a set.

The specially remastered intro chapter, "Mist Over the Mountains", runs just under four minutes, but packs a densely poetic punch. Barbarika blends Zbigniew Preisner’s reprise from A Short Film About Love, a traditional Vietnamese đàn bầu moon-worship melody, Jolin Tsai’s chart-topper Pleasure, and a glitchy Laurel Halo x St. Vincent remix snippet—all within a single breath. The result is a polyphonic, layered experience that slides between contrasts—raw and refined, intimate and abstract, high art and pop vernacular—tapping into a shared sensorial language that’s both cerebral and chill.
