For Pride Month, this mix brings together the sounds of queer artists/musicians. Perhaps, the sound itself is queer. The boundaries of sound— "like the boundaries of queer— are never stable but are defined by what exceeds, what goes beyond, what cannot be contained, represented, or spoken" (quoted from Christina Nadler and Megan Turner). The sound of these artists embodies with refusal, a break with the temporality of heteronormative society.
This mix also includes music and voices that support HIV/AIDS awareness and the LGBTQ+ community: Bob Ostertag - "All the Rage" recorded the sound of the 1991 AB101 Veto Riot in San Francisco, a protest against discrimination; Coil - "Tainted Love" was a pioneering cover from 1985 with proceeds donated to AIDS research, breaking the silence around the epidemic; Diamanda Galás - "Let's Not Chat About Despair" was a piece from Masque of the Red Death trilogy. Galás’s music has always been challenging the cage of morality, sexual politics, and HIV/Aids ignorance; also Mykki Blanco's recitation of "I Want A Dyke For President" by Zoe Leonard, an American artist and prominent AIDS activist.
These tracks delve into death, anger, and despair, yet are imbued with active mourning, for human rights.
